2. Develop an algorithm
We introduce kids to algorithms by asking them to be a robot who follows step-by-step instructions on how to do a simple task, for example: make a sandwich. The instructions are given along with pictures to cater to kids who are not proficient in reading. When they are done making the sandwich and eating it too (and most of them cannot resist eating it mid-way), we develop their understanding of how algorithms are specific step-by-step instructions given to computers or robots to complete a certain task. And then they move on to developing an algorithm themselves. This activity also gives us an opportunity to develop their understanding of input and outputs.
Concepts introduced
- Understanding algorithms
- Inputs and outputs
Age: 4-7
Besides giving kids a delicious sandwich to munch on, this activity provides a great opportunity to introduce them to the language of computers.
